I recall a meeting with the President of Sun Information Services
with both the Marketing folks and all of the SYSPROGs, and one
SYSPROG raised the question of why the marketing folks got these
big bonuses but the SYSPROGs did all the work with no real bonus..

The president replied, "We'll, you techies first need to walk
in the shoes of the marketing folks to understand what they
have to do to make a sale".

Turning to one of the marketers beside him who was all spiffed
up with Italian patent leather shoes, the SYSPROG replied

"Walk in your shoes, hell I can't even AFFORD them."

Jack Woehr makes some good points.
Most sysprogs are not very good at public relations. We do not make much
noise, blow our own horns and are like proof readers for a publisher... IF we
do our jobs perfectly no one notices, which is right, BUT if we make a mistake
EVERYONE notices. I have been fortunate to have/choose some very good bosses
(interviews are for me to evaluate the boss of course) who understood and
appreciated what sysprogs do.
We used to laugh at annual meetings where the marketing departments handed
out paper awards and plaques left and right, and showered themselves with
praise. We sat in the back thinking that we earned more than any two of them,
and remembered that they could not do a thing without us. Lack of loyalty to a
job does not mean we have no Pride in our work.
