If the GDS datasets are on DASD I think I've read it is possible to
create a new GDG with a different name and rename a GDS so it in effect
moves from the old GDG to the new GDG. If so, you could do that to
preserve all the generations under a different GDG, delete the old GDG,
define an Extended GDG with the old name, and repeat the process to move
all the GDSs back to their original name.

If dealing with a GDG whose generations are on tape and can find some
way to uncatalog the GDS datasets without tape management scratching
them, perhaps first extract catalog info and generate a file with the
info (or commands) needed to recatalog all the tape GDS's, uncatalog
them all, delete the GDG and re-define as Extended GDG, then use the
file info to recatalog everything.

If a mix of tape and DASD GDSs in the GDG, one would have to use a
combination of the two techniques, since rename not possible for tape
GDS, and uncatalog not legal for SMS DASD GDS.

Sounds like a royal pain, If I had to do this, I would write some REXX
code to automate the process to eliminate errors and test thoroughly
first. Sounds like one could make a case for a Migrate
GDG-to-Extended-GDG utility.
