Bingo. The collective wisdom of this group is great! With CONTROLINTERVALSIZE(8192) I get the same problem as before, so I left it off completely (as Peter suggested), and the ZFS formatted just fine. I may have found this myself at a later date, since the job (without CISIZE) ran on another sysplex and I may have seen the difference one of these years. I don't know why I had this parm in in the first place. Thanks for the good laugh, Tom! Now exit, stage left, muttering: Why didn't IBM just specify in plain English that one cannot determine CISIZE instead of using an obscure, undocumented reason code and an unhelpful amount of dumps and messages?!?!?
