Tom I may be wrong, but the DLm is more like a database for the tapes. There is no storage on it. The needs to be another piece of equipment to provide the storage for the actual tape usage.
I think you are asking can you use a storage device other than EMC equipment to hold the actual tape data. Is that correct? If so, I have not seen any documentation that would indicate anything other than EMC equipment can be used for the DLm for their actual tape data. This link does not show anything other than EMC equipment.
