Pause-less garbage collection is not new http://www.artima.com/lejava/articles/azul_pauseless_gc.html. From reading a previous post by Timothy Sipples it appears that IBM have added some new hardware instructions to the z14 to assist with the read/write barriers required to implement the algorithm.
