Outgoing: One, or even none.  On VM/CMS I've successfully tested sending
outbound mail with a TCPCLIENT stage connecting to port 25 of a server on
an not-even-IBM platform, completely bypassing the VM system's SMTP.

Incoming: Not tested. I would probably have needed an SMTP server to hand
traffic off to RSCS (or JES in the z/OS case).

I did not investigate encryption, security, etc.
