Scott,
        I too have limited experience with java, but I can tell you an IBM 
consultant provided us with a 10 line
java program to read an output stream from CMOD and write it back to DASD.  We 
had issues with the format,
all reports restored this way had an extra line in each sysout effectively 
doubling its size.
I rewrote it in 25 lines of Rexx to resolve the issue.  The Rexx had the extra 
benefit of being significantly faster
(consistently 20% faster) as we’re not using java with its JVM creation and 
destruction overhead.
