I had similar experience with z196. Used IND$FILE to download to USB. Not only could HMC not process the last byte in the file, it screwed things up so badly that I had to reboot it!
As Doug says, it's easy to fix. Even plain old Notepad works. Just don't leave that last byte hanging there. Unless HMC code has been fixed in the intervening years. Having been bit so badly, I never tried it again on later generations. . .
