The NIP program (loosely, the IPL time code) explicitly directs messages to SYSCONS. We do that here for SAD; no 3270 devices are defined. It always works. OTOH we have not written a standalone dump tape in years, so I can't say much there. 2. All defined 3270 consoles are inaccessible. We use VCC to handle I/O to emulated 3270. NIP messages are sent to IODF-defined NIP consoles if at least one is accessible. But we've had cases of VCC FUBAR that is not detected by NIP. NIP thinks he's talking to a console, but nobody is actually home. The only way around this problem is to force the 3270 console chpids offline so that NIP will redirect messages to SYSCONS. This is a rare PITA that also always works. The above statements are not dependent AFAIK on hardware level. Same is true for z13 (our latest) and all earlier models in my experience. If you don't get messages on SYSCONS, look at the standalone restore program definitions and at the IOCDS. . .
