Button 287 "VSAM is the COBOL of Access Methods" was by Tom McSloy at GUIDE
in 1975.  And COBOL programmers at the time thought that was a compliment!

I'm not so "young" to remember that, however I vaguely remember I read some 
VSAM book (bought for many $$$). The book was awfully outdated, so I learned 
mostly VSAM history and obsolete features. It was ~13 years ago, but I would 
bet VSAM was born in 1974.
