What I usually do is, that I search for string and then use 'Since:' and I use 
"Sort By:" 'Date/Time (Most Recent First)'.

That should at least address that 'more hits' issue. I also hate that 'more 
hits'.

If I think my search arguments are discussed many years ago, I usually use 
'Since:' and also 'Until:' where the years are about 5 years apart.

Your decision. You use what is the best for you.

Just try it and also 'Since:" for once. If it is not working for you, that is 
really bad. I also wish there are more search options and filtering keys, but
