My similar war story, DOS/VS job would fail with system error that blocks read from tape didn't match label block count; OK, that is a hardware error, dropped block. After much cleaning and attempts at repair we would still get it. Programmer came in one day and said they had fixed it themselves and were mad that they had to do it. Their fix? Switch to NL tape....
