I don't know about the SYSVAR.
I am using this alternative (elapsd time) to see how fast my Catalog Search
Interface is working:
SAY TIME('E')
SAY DATE('E')' 'TIME('L')
Play around with CSI using a clone of IGGCSIRX ... etc ...
SAY TIME('E')
SAY TIME('R')
SAY DATE('E')' 'TIME('L')
Try this crude snippet to see if you get any timings.
