I've seen /r/sysadmin on Reddit lose their collective mind about the news regarding Big Blue's purchase of RedHat. It appears to me that IBM has been putting a lot of investment in open source for the past few years...especially within the z/OS ecosystem. They may be doing it to get deeper into cloud, but I believe there's a benefit of investing in the open source community since RedHat does manage the kernels for Fedora and CentOS.
A lot of negativity is flying around about IBM killing off the community versions of the OS in preference for nickel-and-diming people, but I don't see that happening. Open source is very much alive in tech circles, and big players like IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle are seeing that. Rather than buying out the company and smothering it, like they would have 10-20 years ago, they're buying these companies and adding them to their portfolio. RedHat is a good company, from my discussions with other IT pros, and I believe it's a good add for IBM. Once the initial shock wears off, I believe the tech community at-large will see this as a positive sign that points to IBM's commitment to open source. Anthem, Inc. Nathan A.
