IBM is doing you a favor.
We used to have conditional "getmains" and "freemains" (in various
flavors) all over the place and they were nothing but trouble because
important issues in the code (for example, trying to free storage owned
by a different TCB) were never surfaced. So, a few years ago I
instituted a project to remove them. In the end, we kept a few
conditional requests -- each one required serious justification, but I
would say something like 95% of conditional requests were converted to
unconditional.
Our product/code quality has only benefited from this change.
