The advantage of the .pdx is that it is a full index of the collection so that doing a search is significantly faster than doing a search of all the pdf's in the folder which requires opening each to search.
Btw. Using Firefox I was prompted to define a file association, much like with Windows, on how to handle the .pdx and that worked great. Would be nice if there was a way in Chrome to do that.
