I thought I'd seen it throw an error but maybe not, and system is down ATM so I can't check In any case, one approach might be to go UTF==>EBCDIC==>UTF and make sure it round-trips successfully, which it won't if it's lossy. On my list of "things to do when I finish the time machine": No ASCII/EBCDIC divide; no null-terminated strings. And something else, I forget what right now.
