I would type two spaces after a period, except that software handles it for me. Is there any reason to follow the rule when typing, e.g., text with LaTeX markup?

Two spaces after every period that ends a sentence was the ironclad rule they taught us in high school typing class on those old manual typewriters, and it still makes sense today! Two spaces after periods makes paragraphs typed in the monospace fonts (yay for Courier New!) that we (of course) always use *so* much easier to read. None of that new-fangled proportional font stuff for us after all. Habits learned early are nearly impossible to break, but are not always wrong to keep.
