I think I heard at the SHARE session on Safe Software's relatively cheap
"Safe DR" product that they had to modify DDR to play nicely at all.

If you don't want to pay the higher price for all the capabilities of:
CA's VM:Backup
CA's VM:Backup-HIDRO
( http://supportconnectw.ca.com/public/vm/hidro/vmdrsupp.asp),or
IBM's "Backup and Restore Manager for z/VM"
(sorry if I missed any), then you might want to check out "SAFE DR"
( http://www.vm.safesoftware.com/SafeDR.htm) rather than reinventing the
wheel.

(Native) DDR does the following for tape prompts:
Unloads the current tape volume
Issues prompt message to local console
Issues a REWIND.

The REWIND is an elegant way of waiting (in that it works the same under CMS on or real/virtual hardware), w/o having to create a wait mechanism.  When the next tape volume is mounted, DDR automatically "wakes up" from the REWIND.

Regarding SafeDR, our z/VM Backup/Restore and Disaster Recovery solution, we provide several modifications to your DDR module that changes its behavior so that we can handle tape mounts, stack multiple dumps on a tape, span tapes, and support labeled tapes.

I'd prefer to describe our pricing as "reasonable".  Cheap makes me cringe a bit.  But if it makes it more attractive to you..then cheap it is!  The reality is that it's about 3 days pay.  Tough to match that if you're creating and (more important) maintaining your own solution.

For that, you get the best disaster recovery automation available.  We completely automate standalone recovery so that even my 9-month-old daughter could implement disaster recovery for your zVM system.  You also get minidisk and volume backups, tape drive/volume management, multiple streams, and quiesce automation.  (And more!)
