the above journal artcile reference mentions 1997 for millicode. it
mentions millicode being needed for (at least) sie and pr/sm. pr/sm
was done about a decade earlier on 3090 (and was significantly more
difficult in native microcode).

has piece of email from mar81 that mentions the (then) announced
amdhal 5880 with macrocode (and used for hypervisor implementation).

i had first started running into references regarding amdahl's work on
macrocode the previous year (mar80).
