BASH is not only a command shell, it also provides a programming language. It is used for scripting commands and automating repetitive tasks, not unlike REXX, but not nearly as cool!

The if command is just that, it starts a condition check.

A semi-colon (;) works too. You'll get a bash error message, but your prompt should come back.
