I asked 'cause I had a problem with doing a DET NIC/DEF NIC combo with an ESM involved. If you have a NICDEF in your directory, and you detach it/define it and there is an ESM involved, you will get the message.

PTF UM31879/APAR VM63989 closed recently that fixes this problem. This was on a zvm520 system at RSU 0601.

Logon. Why else have it in the directory?

Is this at a LOGON, or after a DET NIC/DEF NIC combo?

I knew that. That is what prompted the question.

You have to be explicity authorized for a vswitch. CP SET VSWITCH VMTEST GRANT THISUSER and/or the ESM that you are using.

Is there some reason that having a "NICDEF 500 TYPE QDIO LAN SYSTEM VMTEST" in
the directory does not authorize the user for that switch?
