So ... this is useful ... why? ...
because so many scripting lanuages work with decimal?
(in the sense that they DO NOT convert to/from binary)

I'm not normally the detractor,
but it smacks to me of a 50s throwback.

I like how Tcl handles it.
The interpreter maintains several underlying formats for
any variable,  whatever is viable.  So if a variable holds a number,
the binary representation can be kicked around instead of decimal.
Bigger footprint per,  but potential processing payoff.
