C is awesome, Dave. C++ would be better renamed C--. THERE you can lay the blame for some bad programming. And Java ... don't get me started. But any of these are just tools which have sadly been misused ... and misunderstood. Think of C as a cross between PL/I and Assmbler. If you like PL/I: with C you have the same basic syntax. If you like Assembler: with C you have the most nitty-gritty control of any language short of Assembler. But don't expect C to hold your hand to the same extent that PL/I does. If you do (and the similar syntax might invoke that emotion) you will be disappointed. And as with Assembler, C gives you plenty of rope to hang yourself. (Gun, foot, you know the drill.) But those pointers are a real mind bender. -- R;
