Nick,

Of course VM:Tape can do this ... but you're obviously looking for a
stand-alone utility (which I've thought about making, but unfortunately
have not ... I almost started this a couple of weeks ago ... ).

The primary issues you face are needing to either be able to physically
ATTACH the drives to an ID for analysis via CCW which is many times not
possible; or, you need to have a machine with the authority to read REAL
storage to analyze various control blocks.

I've never seen/heard of "Kris Buelen's QDEVS exec". It sounds like his
implementation is like VM:Tape's and reads control blocks to figure out
what a tape drive really is. However, never having used it, I'm not
sure if it can distinguish the many types of STK 3590 proprietary drives
from the many IBM 3590 proprietary drives (it may report all 3590 drives
as some type of IBM model?).
