I would venture a bet that the error when trying to IPL an unsupported
operating system in an IFL has never depended on something buried in the
operating system's ipl code. It is not that the O/S is IFL aware. Quite
the opposite, that the IFL is O/S aware, is the only way to enforce the
restriction with any assurance that it is being enforced. If it were
buried in the ipl code of the O/S, it would be subject to being cracked,
probably with only minimal effort.

Hum, you're message made me think of something. I wonder when OS/390 2.9
came out. Was it before the zSeries? I bet so. That probably means that
the code which causes a hardware check when OS/390 2.10 or z/OS are
IPL'ed on an IFL engine is not in OS/390 2.9. Now I'm curious if IBM put
something into the microcode on the zSeries and above to force an error
with non-IFL aware versions of OS/390 that otherwise might run on an
IFL. <hum, as Artie Johnson would say: "Verrrryyyy Interesting!"
