Everything you need to know about the SSL server is at 
http://www.vm.ibm.com/related/tcpip/vmsslinf.html.

The book is correct - z/VM 5.1 only supports SLES8.  Note that z/VM 5.1 
will no longer be serviced effective Sept 30, 2007.
