"Mother" would be proud. If you can spare a few extra disk packs, this is 
probably the least complex and least risky method.

You certainly can run SERVICE with everything up. As you note, I'd schedule 
PUT2PROD for my maintenance window just in case it decides to do something 
unexpected. It's not supposed to, but "not supposed to" doesn't answer my phone 
when it does. 8-)
