Thank you all for your replies. It looks like I will have to speak to the admin of that box. I am not 100% sure what type of box it is but from the message "220 whmm0232 Microsoft FTP Service (Version 5.0)" can I assume that it is some sort of PC and not what I thought as a Unix machine?

I am able to login to this machine, cd to the proper subdirectory but I get '530 User access denied' when I do the put command. Could be a configuration decision on the Unix box, too. Some Unix FTP servers have the ability to check users against a list of authorized locations, and so, permit the same user to get different behaviour from different machines. The 530 is coming from the remote server, so you'd need to talk to the admin of that box to determine what he/she is seeing in the remote logs.
