Thank you all for your replies. It looks like I will have to speak to
the admin of that box. I am not 100% sure what type of box it is but
from the message "220 whmm0232 Microsoft FTP Service (Version 5.0)" can
I assume that it is some sort of PC and not what I thought as a Unix
machine?

I am trying to use the ftp command on the mainframe to put a CMS file on
a Unix box. I am able to login to this machine, cd to the proper
subdirectory but I get '530 User access denied' when I do the put
command.

 

Could be a configuration decision on the Unix box, too. Some Unix FTP
servers have the ability to check users against a list of authorized
locations, and so, permit the same user to get different behaviour from
different machines. The 530 is coming from the remote server, so you'd
need to talk to the admin of that box to determine what he/she is seeing
in the remote logs.
