Let's assume you have subnet mask 255.255.255.0.   140.185.101.1 is a 
class B address, so we replace the first TWO octets of BOTH the address 
and mask with zeroes.

Mask = 0.0.255.0
IP = 0.0.101.1

AND the two together and you get the subnet value: 0.0.101.0

Starting with z/VM 5.2, you switch to use the new syntax that avoids all 
that ... stuff.
