That's kind of why we wrote SYSVINIT. Rather than have everyone reinvent the wheel, if we come up with a basic framework that everyone can use, then we can concentrate on building up a set of reuseable startup/shutdown widgets for most (if not all) common products. Writing a plugin for SYSVINIT is a lot easier than coding up a complete startup automation solution. Printing is also on my list to get a consensus solution.
