Worked through this with the Support Center, and the combined effort
resulted in finding that the SYSTEM NETID file on the S disk was empty. So,
even though you give Dirmaint and Dirmsat all the information it needs to
talk to RSCS and the other system, something is still dependant on the
entries in the SYSTEM NETID file, and not having the correct entries there
stops the whole thing from working....

Our upgrade to z/VM 5.3 is now complete. Thanks for listening...
