Hi Folks,

We've been using IBM 9393 (a.k.a. STK Iceberg) DASD for many years now.
It has worked terrific, but we'll need to upgrade in the near future to
a newer technology.

The things I love about the 9393 (with the SnapShot microcode feature)
is that it is natively supported by CMS, including:

* SIBFMTSS replacement for CMS FORMAT command. CMS FORMAT
commands complete instantly (less than 1 second) with virtually no I/O
on the channel
* SIBVMRVA MODULE provides an easy programming interface to the
9393 SnapShot functions, with control returned to the calling program on
completion.
* The SnapShot command snaps a volume in less than 1 second with
virtually no I/O on the channel, and requires virtually no back-end
storage (i.e. it's not actually making a track by track copy, just
pointers to deltas between the source and snapped volumes).

I know most modern DASD provides methods of "snapping" volumes, but
which ones work best in a native VM/CMS environment? In particular, we
absolutely MUST have a replacement for the CMS FORMAT module since we
format a ton of CMS mdisks (often TDisk) daily. I'd LOVE to find a
model that extends these enhancements to the Linux environment with a
'dasdfmt' replacement as well.

-TIA
