Ah.  z/VM 4.4.  How quaint.  :-)  In z/VM 5.3 the VSWITCH can 
differentiate between a "port outage" (unplugged, disabled, powered off) 
and an actual OSA adapter card failure.  The recovery actions are 
different for the two, even handling the case where all OSAs go offline. 
If you go so far as to set up etherchannels ("link aggregation"), the 
recovery is even faster and less disruptive.

I think you would be pleased with its recovery characteristics.  I would 
happily have an "AIX vs. z/VM High Availability Virtual Networking 
Throwdown".
