As usual, Kris is correct. But I've always taken a slightly different approach: 1) Get R/W access to the CF1 disk as, for example, "I". 2) COPYFILE SYSTEM CONFIG I -1SYSTEM CONFIG O (OLDDATE 3) XEDIT SYSTEM CONFIG I 4) Make needed changed, and FILE it knowing that you still have "-1SYSTEM CONFIG I" on the CF1 5) Run CPSYNTAX SYSTEM CONFIG I 6) Repeat steps 3-5 as needed, understanding that CPSYNTAX will NOT catch EVERYTHING that can go wrong at IPL, just syntax errors. 7) Release/Detach the CF1 disk, CPACCESS the CF1 disk as usual. 8) Get the CF2 disk as R/W. 9) Sync up all files on the CF1 and CF2 disks (in case something gets seriously hosed, or you lose the CF1 disk due to hardware, etc.) 10) Release/Det the CF2 disk, CPACCESS it as usual
I wrote a CPCONFIG EXEC that automates that whole process. It keeps backup copies as "-1SYSTEM CONFIG" through "-9SYSTEM CONFIG" rolling through so that most recent backup is always -1, then -2, etc. Anyone is welcome to ask for a copy of CPCONFIG EXEC. But it flies in the face of IBM's use of the CF1/2/3 disks (think: VMSES/E's SERVICE EXEC and PUT2PROD EXEC). Folks, I've been informed that we're moving to new physical dasd probably next week. So, I think this will work but was looking for verification.... Backup current System config to from cf1 to cf2. Change system config to new CUA's. We're moving one for one 2000 - 4000. Update CF1 Shutdown z/VM. Reboot. IF, repeat, IF I did it correctly and or there are no other problems then fine. BUT, if there are problems, I may need to return to the original system config. THAT's where I want to make sure I understand this right. I can at z/VM load time, change the parm disk from CF1 to CF2 by specifying the starting cylinder, correct? AND that is the only change I need to do to come up on a different disk. Brian W.
