welcome to z/VM, btw...hope you find it as fun and exciting as most of
us here do.
The point others have already made here is that z/VM does not *need* to
use the IODF to discover what the hardware configuration is like in the
LPAR where it is running. At IPL time, CP is smart enough to figure out
what devices are available; it's all dynamic. CP does not access the
IODF at all to discover it's hardware configuration.
Let z/OS continue to do the management of the IODF, just as you did
before z/VM showed up.

The first thing that comes to mind is: Why move it? If you are happy
with your current IODF management, then there is no need to reinvent
the wheel and move the IODF to VM. In fact, you could cause yourself
some problems by moving it. Please explain your thinking a little
more so that we can offer appropriate advice.

I've just installed our very first z/VM system (5.3 r1, but waiting
for 5.3r3 DVD from IBM) alongside z/OS 1.9. I'm afraid my z/VM
knowledge is next to zero at the moment and I'm the z/VM expert! :-)
Our IODF is managed by z/OS for all z/OS and z/VM LPARs. Is there a
guide anywhere to getting the IODF from our z/OS systems over to
z/VM? Had a look in the z/VM IO Configuration manual but nothing
jumped out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
