I think he said he had an actual machine called "SERVICE" logged on to a physical address. at least that is the way I read his note - but then I am an old man - and forgetful ;-)

Service refers to more of a task that it does rather than an actual machine named ?SERVICE?. I always considered them to be long running users. For instance, we use DB2, which runs 24/7, hence it is a service that is always running. There might be a technical/official definition, but that?s how I?ve always looked at it.
