I remember that also, but it was many years ago. The z/OS in an LPAR works without a portname, and the z/VM and z/OS worked on the VLAN, one with a portname and one without, so I really don't think that's it.
I did remove the portnames from my VM TCPIP stacks and restarted them, then stopped and restarted the z/OS device, no difference.
