Not being an IBM'er, I have no access to PL/X, but my guess is that it can be told to generate multiple code paths for a particular sequence of operations, that will be gated by checks of the processor type. This will allow z/VM to run on a machine with the original system z 64 bit hardware (z800/z900?) but will take advantage of the z10 instruction set if running on one.
