To answer the other question... you can find a list of common CMS Return 
Codes documented at the front of the "Quick Reference" (SC24-6111-00), 
under "Understanding Messages and Return Codes" (page 9 of this edition).

This is one manual that's handy to have leaning against the PC monitor.  I 
refer to it often when coding execs so that my return codes follow a 
pre-existing, documented pattern.  We all instinctively know return code 
28, why not be consistent?

I should have investigated this further before bothering the list.

I looked at the source for VMFTP and it return -5 on subcommand syntax 
error

I run the VMFTP with the ECHO ALL option and I can not see a syntax
error.  And the -5 is always on the PUT command.
