>From a smaller shop perspective (z/890) I sure can understand it. The 390 side is efficient, due to historic reasons. CICS: Efficient DB2: Efficient (more due to it can't do the relative recent inefficient stuff) Cobol: Much more efficient than Java.
We have 89 MIPs on the 390 side, and 366 MIPs on the IFL side. On the IFL: Oracle isn't so bad. Oracle EOM takes its pound of flesh. Java: What can I say? Having separate Linux machines, for each "server" is less efficient (Samba servers, NFS servers, FTP servers, DB2 Connect servers, DB2/UDB servers, Oracle servers, etc. But then, it is nicer to have separate machines when you are having problems. But it all takes cpu/memory, which is much cheaper now. Then, of course, the work loads. New work loads to any give 390 machine? Fewer. New work loads to any given IFL (when starting from zero), quite a bit. The question sometimes begs an answer, "What can't we put on the IFL(s) ?".
