The "SSL Alert: HANDSHAKE_FAILURE" message lead me to believe that the error is occurring early in the negotiation process. Before the certificates are involved. One possibility is that the server wants to use the AES cipher. Charlotte does not understand AES.

If I remember correctly there is a trace or debug option that will display the negotiation process.
That may shed some light on what is happening.
