This doesn't help solve your problem, BUT ObAnecdote: Back at Linuxcare/Levanta, we have an MP3000 with 4 VM LPARs and Linux guests under those. It ran fine, but certain LPARs would get slow at times due to paging when they were cranking, and others were just idling along. So I pointed out that if we ran the four VMs under one VM, we'd share all the real memory, things would be better, etc., etc. So we tried it. Linux was about 10x *slower* in that configuration! (And yes, there was Java involved.) So we went back. We had no monitoring tools, and no time to tinker, so maybe we just did something dumb, but it's hard to see how -- in the *other* direction, I'd be more inclined to believe we'd misallocated something, but VM is pretty smart about such things. Never did figure it out, and never had a chance to try again, alas. Long ago and far away, much smaller machines, earlier Linux and VM versions, but... ...phsiii
