IMHO the install doc is getting muddier with each new release. I suspect that the reason for it is to make it so simple or straight forward that anyone who knows nothing about VM can follow the rules. This is to assist the lifelong MVS'er or *IX person to drop in a VM hypervisor and then get on with LINUX. For the people who have a few (lot of) years experience, the documentation shortcuts and a few other changes just cause confusion. I have suggested to various IBM people that a good test of their doc would be to have someone with some experience try the install ahead of time. I agree with the comments re: the DVD install in this thread. I ordered and received 5.4 on DVD's and along with it came a 3590 tape with the program products on it. Installing from the DVD's took a little head scratching. The "reason", I was told, for the tape is there is licensed code on it. There is also licensed code on the DVD. Oh well.

The trick seems to be that when the right steps are followed, the RSU
envelopes land on the MAINT 500 disk as by magic (because the
particular track images happen to be in the directory). When you load
the two DVDs onto an FTP server, the contents of the two get merged. I
thought that when you install straight from the DVD it gives you the
option to swap media. If nothing else, you could simply order the RSU
electronically and put it there.

I responded to IBM per RCF that skipping the step in the instructions
kept me hunting for a while. It would be nice to simply point out how
it works. But space on the summary is limited.
