Hi Simon, We did exactly what you describe when we moved from z/VM 4.4 to z/VM 5.2 - backed up the spool with SPXTAPE on the 4.4 system, brought up the z/VM 5.2 system with new spool volumes, and restored the 4.4 SPXTAPE under 5.2. No problems.
