Almost all customers I've consulted with divide the support among 2 different groups - a z/VM (mainframe) support and a Linux group (usually already supporting Linux on other platforms).
Having said that -- one phenomena always occurs: Either someone from the mainframe support group ends up learning a bit (or more than a bit) about Linux, how minidisks related to filesystems, or LVM, etc etc. to better know how to diagnose and how to help the guest perform better OR Someone from the Linux group learns enough about z/VM to be able to do installs, some basic diagnosis at the z/VM level, learns how to use 'vmcp' to talk to the hypervisor, etc. In my experience - the first (mainframer learning Linux) usually ends up being the most valuable to the organization. But either way, one of these things needs to happen to allow things to move forward.
