Whoops!  I see Sir Rob beat me to it.  :-)

Too bad the telnet server doesn't send an error message back to the client 
and wait 5 seconds before killing the connection.

One other thing that might get you over the hump: SET REMOTE ON in XEDIT. 
That will cause XEDIT to do more analysis and compression of the 
datastream rather than brute force.
