OK, thanks. So it is not my memory falling to pieces. It is good to have 
the sanity check. If it is just a function of SAY that is breaking the 
lines then I should be able to get round this. In fact, since seeing your 
reply, I have tried PIPEing to console and that works fine. I don't know 
why I didn't try that earlier ;-(
