That is how I do my maintenance/migrations too. When I need to move from 
5.3
to 5.4, I create alternate mdisks in the production systems (VMARES, VMLR
ES)
and  copy the stuff from 540RES to the alternate mdisks. Then on cutover,
 I
use dirmaint to switch the production and alternate mdisks. If I need to
revert, I use dirmaint to switch the mdisks back. The exception is the CP

Nucleus. I can put that out on the production config disk with a unique n
ame
(CP54NUC MODULE) and use the SAIPL process to ipl with this alternate
nucleus until we are satisfied with it.
