When I was still blessed with having Tom Huegel on staff he installed something called TRACK that allows us to see the current status of a guest. Might be something for you to look into in the future. I find it especially useful for a VSE or other non-CMS guest in a wait state or a logoff/force pending status, as you can identify the CCUUU of the device with the outstanding I/O.
